Skin hook your bait in tough cover

An old timer once told me “if your not loosing baits then your not fishing in the right place”. It would be difficult to deny that there is a certain amount of logic behind this statement. To catch fish you have to get your bait deep into cover without getting hung up. texposed rigging your bait and skin hooking it can help you accomplish these objective. Many soft plastics can be texposed and skin hooked such as worms, craws, tubes, and soft jerk baits.
How to rig it
Once you have the bait texposed all you need to do is stretch the worm slightly away from the hook point (figure A) then as it regains its normal shape allow the hook point to enter just under the “skin” of the bait (figure B). You will find the bait to be incredibly weedless. Skin Hooking also allows for a good solid hook set because the hook point does not have to penetrate a lot of soft plastic.

When to use it
The rigging technique is very effective in almost all types of submerged and surface plant life from coon tail to thick beds of lily pads.
How to fish it
The rig can be fished weightless or with you choice of split shot, bullet weight, or even Carolina rigged. You can drag the rig through submerged weed beds, around stumps, and through sparse lily pads. It is also an excellent rigging technique for fishing soft plastics across the tops of thick beds of lily’s or other similar plants on the waters surface. When fishing lily’s simply cast or pitch your bait onto the surface of the pads. Drag the bait until it reaches an opening then let it drop through. This is a deadly technique so hang on to your rod!
