Centre County Fishing Report 5/23/06

The weather reports I’ve seen thus far look very encouraging. Of course we all know weather reports and the weather can change on a dime. Fishing should be good to excellent this weekend. The trout fishing has been great in the local streams and the fish activity in some of the lakes is really starting to peak. Here’s the scoop..
The local creeks are still seeing trout being caught. Recent rains and cooler weather seems to have helped the trout fishing. The fly fisherman have been doing well on Spring Creek and the fisherman are still chasing trout on the Bald Eagle Creek and its tributaries. If you’ve got time a visit to the Black Moshanon Creek should yield some nice results this weekend. In-line spinner are great in these streams. Stick to the basics of gold and silver and you can’t go wrong.
The Panfishing at Joseph Foster Sayers Dam, Bald Eagle State park has been fantastic. A reliable source tells me that the crappie and perch bite is better than its been for a number of years. Overall the size of the panfish has been very good as well. I have one report of a 14.5 inch crappie being caught. that’s a darn nice fish! Remember the lake is governed by special panfish enhancement regulations so please read them carefully and follow them. Catch and release is a great way to keep the fishing good for all but if you are keeping a few for the pan only keep what you will use. Surprisingly a good old fashioned red worm fished under a bobber has been working well for both crappie and perch. Twister tails in chartreuse, yellow, bubblegum, or purple are also good bets.
