Today we caught good numbers of fish. The size wasn’t anything to write home about but in true form, these smallmouth where ready to do battle! The two largest fish were 13 inches and the rest were around 12 inches. My fishing buddy and I boated 18 smallmouth bass and one largemouth in about 4 hours of fishing. The highlight of the trip was having an adult bald eagle glide over our heads and perch in a nearby tree. The eagles appearance caused quite a stir in the local duck population. I’ve never seen ducks so nervous in all my life. The little guys seemed to have trouble deciding weather they wanted to fly away or just lay low. The bald eagle kept us company for quite a while before deciding to move on. I think we were in his fishing spot. (more…)

Early morning cloud cover helped get my fishing partner and I off to a fast start the ended as quickly as it started. We arrived on the water about 7:45 and the bite lasted about one more hour before the sun took it toll and the fish stopped hitting. During that one hour my fishing partner landed 3 smallmouth and had numerous hits. He lost a few as well. The largest fish was a 15 incher pictured above. Not a giant, but definitely respectable. I wasn’t so lucky. I had many hits but just could not connect with any fish. This very frustrating day ended with a big “goose egg” for me. No fish caught! This is my first skunking of the season. Hopefully the last!

Many of you may already be familiar with the toxic spill last week into Portage Run caused by a train derailment. This is a major spill involving many miles of Portage Run, Driftwood Branch, and Sinnemahoning Creek. I’ve fished this section of water near and below Driftwood. The article focuses on the “trout” kill but there was also a very health population of smallmouth bass in creek. Evidence of this can be found in the photo included with the Post-Gazette article linked to below. This article does a nice job of outlining the extent of this massive fish kill and even provides some maps of the effected area.

I’ve been hitting the smallmouth bass fishing pretty hard this season so I decided to change things up a little by hitting a the Black Moshannon Lake in search of some largemouth bass. Some folks call them “green fish” or “greenies”. I only fished about an hour and a half due to some other things I had to get done today. My fishing partner and I ended up landing one largemouth a piece. Both fish were 15.5 inches This is actually pretty darn good work given the lakes reputation for giving up only one or two bass per trip and the fact that we only put in an hour and a half worth of fishing time.
