Black Moshannon Lake, changing gears to greenies

15.5 inch Largmouth BassI’ve been hitting the smallmouth bass fishing pretty hard this season so I decided to change things up a little by hitting a the Black Moshannon Lake in search of some largemouth bass. Some folks call them “green fish” or “greenies”. I only fished about an hour and a half due to some other things I had to get done today. My fishing partner and I ended up landing one largemouth a piece. Both fish were 15.5 inches This is actually pretty darn good work given the lakes reputation for giving up only one or two bass per trip and the fact that we only put in an hour and a half worth of fishing time.

Pattern

Quite frankly, given the short time span we were on the water, no real pattern was ever established. Our strategy was just to cover as much water as we could and make as many casts as we could to “fishy” looking targets. The lake is choked with lily pads and other aquatic plants. We worked the edge of thick lily beds with plastic baits casting into every nook and cranny as we moved parallel to the edges. Both fish we caught hit our baits within a foot or so from the lily edge.

Baits

We fished both soft jerkbaits and Yum Dingers. Both fish were caught on chartrues and pumpkin Yum Dingers. The baits were texposed then Skin Hooked for addition weedlesness. No weight was added to the Yum Dingers. We cast the baits up into the lily edges then worked them slowly for about a two feet. Once the baits were more than a couple of feet off the lily edge we reeled the in quickly then cast to another likely target.

Water Conditions

Water temps unknown. Water clarity about 2 feet of visibility.

Weather Conditions

Sunny clear skies.
