Cameron County toxic spill mass killing of trout and smallmouth bass

Many of you may already be familiar with the toxic spill last week into Portage Run caused by a train derailment. This is a major spill involving many miles of Portage Run, Driftwood Branch, and Sinnemahoning Creek. I’ve fished this section of water near and below Driftwood. The article focuses on the “trout” kill but there was also a very health population of smallmouth bass in creek. Evidence of this can be found in the photo included with the Post-Gazette article linked to below. This article does a nice job of outlining the extent of this massive fish kill and even provides some maps of the effected area.
This is a terrible tragedy and one that will take many years overcome. The fish commission expects to find 100% fish kill in the first four miles. Fish are reported dying as far as 35 miles down stream. The photo in the article was taken 15 miles down stream and there are roughly 30 dead fish in that photo from a very small section of the stream bank. I’ve also included a link to a press release from the PA fish Commission which outlines the steps they are taking to assess the extent of this fish kill.
