Kettle Creek and Bush Dam smallmouth bass

Today we caught good numbers of fish. The size wasn’t anything to write home about but in true form, these smallmouth where ready to do battle! The two largest fish were 13 inches and the rest were around 12 inches. My fishing buddy and I boated 18 smallmouth bass and one largemouth in about 4 hours of fishing. The highlight of the trip was having an adult bald eagle glide over our heads and perch in a nearby tree. The eagles appearance caused quite a stir in the local duck population. I’ve never seen ducks so nervous in all my life. The little guys seemed to have trouble deciding weather they wanted to fly away or just lay low. The bald eagle kept us company for quite a while before deciding to move on. I think we were in his fishing spot.
Time of Day
4:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m.
Weather Conditions
Very hot sunny day. Air temps in the mid to high 90’s
Water Conditions
It was obvious there had been some recent rains. The water level was higher than normal for this time of year. The water had a slight stain to it. Water temps not known
Baits
4 inch Yum Dingers were the ticket today rigged with a split shot several inches up the line. The baits were texposed rigged with a 2/0 Gamakatsu offset worm hook. Colors used were pumpkin/chartreuse and watermelon/chartreuse.
Pattern
The sun was hot and beat down on the water. We focused out efforts in water that was shaded by trees growing close to the bank combined with a steep drop off. This turned out to be an excellent idea. Many of the fish hit the baits within a couple of inches from the shore. We also picked up several fish in deeper water (6-8 feet) off structure such as boulders and deep water drop offs. These patterns held up in both the bush dam and the creek. Bottom line. Protection from the sun seemed to be a priority for the fish on this day.
