A recent trout angler study summarized on the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commissions web site contained some very interesting data from two separate studies. The studies were a joint effort between the Pennsylvania State University and the PFBC.
The first study analyzed the catch rates and release rates of stocked streams and wild trout streams. The data indicated that trout fisherman in PA are catching about one trout every hour on stocked streams and averaging almost two fish per hour on wild trout streams. This tells me two things. One, There are good numbers of trout in our waters. Two, I better up my game because I’m not doing that darn good! The really encouraging data in this particular study was the release rates. The study indicated trout fisherman are releasing 63.1% of trout caught on stocked streams and 92.7% on wild trout streams. I was definitely surprised but encouraged by this data. I’m all for guys keeping fish within those limits allowed but I also realize that catch and release insures good numbers of fish for all fisherman.
The second study focused on the “economics of fishing”. How much money does fishing contribute to the PA economy? Well the study estimated that fishing brought $65.7 million dollars into the Pennsylvania’s economy during the first eight weeks of the 2005 season and angling in wild trout streams brings PA 7.16 million. Man, that’s a chunk of change! You can read the details of the article by going to the link below. This article is a must read for all you die hard trout fisherman.
