Sayer’s Dam spillway crappie fishing fun and games

The crappie bite was fast and furious in on the backwaters of the spillway. The only down side was the size of the fish. Toward the end of our fishing trip I and my buddies got a little bored with reeling them in one after another so we developed a fun little game to pit our fishing skills against one another. To hear more about the day fishing and the game we developed feel free to read on.

Location
Sayer’s Dam, Centre County, Pennsylvania

Time
10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Weather Conditions
Sunny and 70 degrees

Water Conditions
Muddy. Water temps in the mid 50’s

Pattern
The fish were in the “back waters” of the spillway where the water warms up first. The action was extremely fast paced with a fish on about every cast. The down side was that most were small in the 5-8 inch range. All fish were returned to the water alive.

Lures and Baits
Twister tail jigs fished about 1 foot under a slip bobber. To see how we set up our slip bobbers check out this article .

The Game!
First, I want to say this game was tons of fun but the crappie really need to be biting consistently.

Number of players: 3-5 is optimal but can be done with only two players/fisherman.

Objective of the game: To be the first fisherman to bring a crappie to hand.

How it’s played: You can play as many rounds as you want but 5 is optimal. To start a round, one fisherman counts to three then all the fisherman cast to their favorite piece of water at the same time. Fisherman are permitted to reel in and cast again if needed. The first fisherman to bring a crappie to hand wins the round.

This is a great game and you can wager things such as your favorite crappie jig, knowledge of a secret fishing spot, or other fishing gear. We had lots of laughs on Sunday when we came up with this game. I’m sure you will too.
