Researchers with the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) and Penn State University are hoping a pilot study using specially tagged fish will help them reel in data about smallmouth bass fishing pressure and harvest on the Susquehanna and Juniata rivers.
“The objective of the pilot tagging study is to estimate catch-and-release rates of smallmouth bass on the Susquehanna River as well as harvest rates,” said Leroy Young, PFBC Fisheries Management Division chief. “This will give us better information than is currently available on the effects of alternative regulations on the smallmouth bass fishery. The results of this initial tagged fish study will also help us determine if a larger effort along these lines would be worthwhile in 2008.”

I was passing by the Juniata River today and had a couple of hours to kill so I decided to do some smallmouth bass fishing. My choice of gear was limited but I was still able to catch some nice fish. All I had with me was a couple offset worm hooks, two Yum-Dingers, and a couple of hellgrammite imitations. Armed with this handful of lures I was able to land five smallmouth bass in about an hour and a half of walking the banks. The smallest fish was 13 inches and the largest 16 inches.

The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission has announced the 2007 fish for fee days. This is a great opportunity for you to get someone interested in this great sport of fishing. My best fishing partner started under similar circumstances in his mid 20’s. All it took was a couple of nice smallmouth bass and he was hooked for life on fishing! I’ve included some very useful fishing links with this post to help get you started on the right foot. Good Fishing!

I’ve written a little bit about soft jerkbaits in previous posts on my blog. I’ve covered general information about rigging soft jerkbaits and selecting the right bait for the right situation. In this article, I want to cover the most common technique I use when fishing for smallmouth or largemouth bass with this type of bait. I call it the “drift and pop” technique. I can’t say enough about how effective this technique has been for me over the years. I often joke with my fishing buddies. If this doesn’t work we might as well go home and mow the grass!
