Hills Creek Lake is a 136 acre impoundment located within Hills Creek State Park. Area 4 biologists sampled Hills Creek Lake in 2003, 2005, and 2007 as part of a statewide study of special regulations on panfish. Hills Creek Lake is managed with conventional panfish regulations, so it served as a control water for the statewide study.

Piney Dam have been slowly recovering from the effects of coal mining in the watershed. Many of the smaller tributaries still contribute iron laden, low pH water but a prodigious effort has been made to clean up this river over the last 30 years and remediation projects continue. The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission has been making strong efforts to bring the fishery back to life. The results of the current survey indicate the fishery is getting better.

The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission recently did a survey of Lackawanna Lake, Lackawanna County. The survey focused mainly on the nice panfish population in that lake such as bluegill and crappie.
