Little Juniata Fishing Smallmouth Bass Report

juniataI did some wading and fishing on the Little Juniata River, Pennsylvania today and had some mixed success. I landed 9 smallmouth bass between 10 and 13 inches. Definitely nothing to write home about but all and all it was a great day on the water and I feel as if I learned something about the river. In my book that’s time well spent!

Time Fished
9:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. then again 11:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

Pattern
Early morning I stated out with a rebel “Pop r” as the sun hadn’t yet started to beat down on the water. I had five heart stopping strikes but could not connect with any of these fish. My main frustration was that I could feel the fish hitting the bait but still never got a solid hook up. I’m thinking I will need to do some serious hook sharpening. The one positive of getting bit was that I knew the fish were on the feed and so I knew it would just be a matter of finding the right bait to entice them. I decided to take a early lunch break and hit the stream again in an hour.

Armed with the knowledge gained earlier that day, I hit the stream again after lunch. This time I focused on large rock and overhanging rock formed by cliffs along the bank. This was idea because the sun was high overhead by now and the fish were seeking a little shade. I fished for an hour landing nine total bass on a combination of soft plastic baits. I was still catching fish when I decided to leave.

Baits
5″ Yum Dingers and Yum Crawbugs worked well. The Dingers were definitely favored by the smallies on this day. Pumpkin and Chartrues Yum Dinger were the ticket today. Crawbugs worked well in pumpkin/red flake.

Water Conditions
Murky, visibility about 2 feet in most parts of the stream. At times water was clearer.

Weather Conditions
Sunny and 80 degrees.
