Fishing report for the Juniata River, Huntington County Pennsylvania

I headed out today to try my luck on the Juniata River for some smallmouth bass. I wanted to explore a new section of the river and was uncertain about the depth and flow so I left my trusty river jon at home and did some wading. Three hours of fishing yielded some excellent action and a nice 18.5 inch smallmouth bass.
It was a cloudy, rainy, and unseasonably cold day but the bass didn’t seem to mind at all. In three hours of fishing my buddy and I landed 19 smallmouth bass. We missed or lost about as many as we caught. The opportunities were definitely there to have a big day.
All but two of the fish were 12 inches or more with one “kicker” fish of 18.5 inches. The fish were all caught on a texposed 4 inch Yum Dinger. We thought there may be a top water bite due to the overcast skies. We spent some time working top water baits like the tiny torpedo and the pop-r without getting one bite. Plastic was definitely the way to go today.
Most fish were caught off deep water current breaks. We also noted that the fish were picking up the baits and dropping them quickly hence we missed a lot of hits and had trouble getting a good hookset on some.
Overall it was a great day of fishing and I was very impressed with the quality of fishing we encountered. I’ll definitely be back with the river jon to cover more of the river and take advantage of the great smallmouth fishery.
