Central Pennsylvania Fishing

Cabin Fever Finally got the best of me! I headed out for the lower part of spring creek armed with my trusty spinning rod and some home made spinners. I was also wearing the newest addition to my fishing gear. A Dry-Plus wading jacket by By Cabelas. I’ve worn the jacket a few times this winter while fishing and I plan to post a review of the jacket in the very near future. The fishing results were mixed but all and all a pretty darn good hour or so on the water. Just what the doctor ordered!

The weather wasn’t too bad for the most part is was sunny with only a few clouds in the sky. The air temperature was around 36 degrees. I didn’t take a what temp so I’m not sure about that.

As I mentioned in my opening paragraph, I was using some home made spinners. One of my fishing buddies makes them for me. We have an agreement. I take him fishing in my boat and he supplies me with a few of his magical spinners each year. So far, I think I’ve gotten the best part of the deal. Today, I was using a gold blade and gold bead body with a couple white beads thrown in for good measure.

I like wading upstream when fishing in line spinners. Most guys who do a lot of spinner fishing will give you the same advise. I’ve fished spinners across the current, straight up the current, and of course with the current as I did today. I’ve had far more luck with the latter by casting upstream and retrieving back to me.

My strategy today was to wade upstream and fan cast upstream to deep riffles, runs, and current breaks. These are usually the most productive targets when using in-line spinners. I do have some luck with deep holes but they definitely do not produce as well as the shallower targets. I moved pretty quickly trying to cover water and make as many casts as I could to likely targets. I only slowed down when a spot looked really promising.

I managed to catch six brown trout in just over an hour of fishing. The action was actually pretty consistent for about the first 45 minutes but then the clouds blocked out the sun. At that point the hits came far less frequently and I only was able to land one more fish.

Some of the browns were absolutely beautiful with vivid red, brown, and yellow markings. The largest two fish pushed 14 inches. This was not the best day I’ve ever had on spring creek but it was certainly satisfying to land a few trout on a Sunday afternoon.
