The crappie are definitely biting at Sayers Dam now. It took a while for the water to reach spawning temperature but things are now in full swing. The crappie are a little on the small side but I suspect as time goes on the big boys and girls will move in shallow.
UPDATE JUNE 2 2008: I made a quick trip out this evening. The bigger crappie seem to be moving shallower now making them easier to catch for us bank fisherman on the lake. Hot spots for crappie on Sayers Dam include, Upper Greens Run, Lower Greens Run, Hunters Run, and the bridge that spans the lake.
It was a great day of crappie fishing. I fished the last few hours of daylight and the fish were up shallow and biting. I really don’t think time of day will make a big difference in the bite. The fishing is red hot right now.
I basically caught crappie on almost every cast. I was using artificial lures with great success. I mean you can’t get any better then a fish on every cast right!

I was extremely impressed by the Yum Insect bait. The bite slowed down to about every other cast on the twister tail so I just switched out to the Yum bait. i was very surprised at the results. The fish were all over this bait and they really hung on. I fished both baits without a bobber. I made 20-25 yard casts off the shore and swam the bait in s-l-o-w-l-y with occasional light lifts using just wrist action. They were tearing it up!! I actually gave out a few of my Yum Insect baits because folks were asking me what the heck I was using that was working so darn good.
I quick survey of my fellow fisherman around me and I found that the top producing baits are:
- chartrues twister tails of various sizes
- Yum Insect baits
- Live minnows fished under a bobber.
