Juniate River, Pennsylvania fishing report

Juniata River Smallmouth Bass

What a great day on the water! We spent 5 hours wading and fishing the Juniata River with very good success. I landed 18 smallmouth bass and my two fishing buddies combined for 8 smallmouth. No monster were caught today but we did catch a couple around 16 inches. The nice thing was that we didn’t have to deal with the little guys. Only a couple of the fish were under 10 inches.

Time of Day

6:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.

Weather Conditions

  • Mostly Sunny
  • air temperatures in the mid 80’s

Water Conditions

  • water level normal flow (per USGS data)
  • visibility 4+ feet

Baits

  • Slug-go, 3 inch, white
  • Yum Dinger, 5 inch, pumpkin/chartrues
  • Yum Dinger, 4 inch, pumpkin/chartrues

Fish Caught

We caught a total of 26 smallmouth bass and several rock bass including one lunker rockie. Only two of the smallmouth were under 10 inches. This size of most fish was very respectable with two fish measuring out at 16 inches. No real lunkers today!

Comments on Pattern

The 4 inch Yum Dinger was the best producer today. We texposed the four inch baits on a 2/0 extra wide gap hook with no weight added. Fish were very scattered. Some were caught on current breaks both shallow and deep (over 4 feet). The bigger fish came from deep newly emerging weedbeds. Fish were not real aggressive. Baits were fished slow and methodically. Many times hits came on the third or fourth attempt at drifting the bait through the same area. I added some pics from the day to my image gallery.

I find that the rebel crawdad, grasshopper and helgrimite are also tops in the lure dept. when fishing the Juni. Most days produce fish

    Chuck,
Thanks for commenting on the post and your bait suggestions. I don’t fish hard baits as often as I probably should. I have used the rebel craw in the past and it is an excellent smallmouth bass bait. No question about that! Again, thanks for the post.
