Mike,
Thanks for the comment. I was fishing this weekend as well. You are right. The top water bite was off a bit but the crankbait bite was really good in the morning.

This time of year mornings will be best for topwater baits.

Well, I had the torpedo on the susquehanna this weekend. While I had several swirlies I did not catch any smallmouth. On the other hand I did catch a 28" Musky. Thanks for the advice.

Chris,
Thanks for the comments. I too like braid but for topwater I've gone with mono. I like the "give" that mono has when combined with a graphite rod.

I uses an All Star IM 8 graphite rod. Medium light power and a fast/medium fast action. Paired with mono this combination has really increased my hookup ratio. I tried a few glass rods but the are just too "mushy" for me at the end of the hook set. The All Star rod I'm using now is designed for top water baits. The thing I like about it most is that the tip is soft enough to get good hookup on the top water but the backbone it has really drives the hook home.

Great article on a great bait. I don't use them enough but you've reminded me why I should. A couple of other thoughts about braid.

One of the advantages to braid is that a lot of braid will actually float and others will sink a lot slower than mono. This, of course, helps the action of any topwater bait.

That said, I've gone back to mono for my topwater and crankbait fishing. The reason is simple, treble hooks. Fish, especially smallmouth, have a great knack at spitting out trebles, especially if they short-strike the bait. I like the flex in mono in battling fish when using treble hook baits.

Are you using a graphite rod for the torpedos? I have gone to using a fiberglass rod for my topwater baits. I am not sure many people do but I like the fiberglass for its flex and softness when battling big fish on trebles. It may be my imagination, but I also feel my ratio of good hook sets have gone up with simply loading up on the fish with the fiberglass.

Again, great post.
