Beutiful Morning on the Susquehanna River, Pennsylvania
Several weeks ago I received an email from MattL over at smallmouths.com inviting me to hit the river at one of his favorite fishing spots (which will be nameless) on the Susquehanna River. Being the fishing enthusiast that I am, I jumped on the opportunity! After a few logistical details were worked on by phone, the trip was on.
I arrived at the river shortly after 5:30 a.m. It was an absolutely beautiful morning. The river was quite and the sun was just peaking over the mountains. Matt and I quickly unloaded our kayaks and prepped our gear for a few hours of morning fishing. We launched our kayaks and silently paddled upstream toward some smallmouth bass breaking on the surface. The river was higher than usual for the time of year and very stained. We had to work hard for the fish we caught. We just barely avoided the skunk! I managed one 13 inch bass on a crankbait and Matt caught a 15 inch smallie on a lipless crank. Definitely not my best outing of the year by far but It was great being out on the water on such a calm morning.
Matt and I talked about fishing in general, gear, and his website smallmouths.com. It was great being out on the water with another fisherman who is as stoked as I am about smallie fishing. We fished hard all morning and neither of us let up in the least. We fished the banks, criss crossed the ledges several times and made hundreds of casts. Matt’s a real smallie enthusiast and I’ve spent some time over on his sites message board. He’s got a lot of great fishing articles and resources. In addition the growing message board community is extremely welcoming AND knowledgeable. If you looking to improve your fishing…certainly keep hanging out here but make it a point to head on over to Smallmouths.com.
I’m sure Matt and I will be hitting the water again this year. I’m also Certain we will be more successful this time around. The Susquehanna is a smallmouth bass factory!
