The crappie are definitely biting at Sayers Dam now. It took a while for the water to reach spawning temperature but things are now in full swing. The crappie are a little on the small side but I suspect as time goes on the big boys and girls will move in shallow.
UPDATE JUNE 2 2008: I made a quick trip out this evening. The bigger crappie seem to be moving shallower now making them easier to catch for us bank fisherman on the lake. Hot spots for crappie on Sayers Dam include, Upper Greens Run, Lower Greens Run, Hunters Run, and the bridge that spans the lake.

The crappie bite was fast and furious in on the backwaters of the spillway. The only down side was the size of the fish. Toward the end of our fishing trip I and my buddies got a little bored with reeling them in one after another so we developed a fun little game to pit our fishing skills against one another. Few fishermen would deny that live minnows are one of the best baits to use when fishing for old mister crappie. Minnows are my go to bait when the bite gets scarce or I’m looking to catch some nice sized slabs for dinner or fun. There are many ways to fish a minnow but in the spirit of keeping it simple I’ll focus on bobber fishing. Rigging a minnow for bobber fishing only requires three simple components; a hook, weight, and the bobber. Simple, yes…effective, certainly.
