I’ve been doing a ton of fishing this season so I haven’t had much time to write. Since the last part of May, I’ve been on the water at least four times a week! I like to tell people that I fish more than any man should be allowed unless he’s doing it for a living! I took a couple of my days of vacation in early July to hit the West Branch of the Susquehanna in the Montgomery area. The fishing was very slow. I didn’t feel too bad because other fisherman we talked to were struggling to put fish in the boat more than us . The two highlights of the trip were a 19.5 inch beautiful smallmouth bass caught by my buddy and a 16 inch tagged fish that I landed!

It was a day of smallmouth “dinks” in the West Branch of the Susquehanna today. A fishing partner and I explored a new section of this river. We fished for about 4 hours. I landed 24 smallmouth bass and my fishing buddy landed 11 smallmouth. Only three of my fish were respectable measuring in the 13-14 inch range. My fishing buddy didn’t fair much better with most of his fish around 10 inches or so. Lots of action but little in the way of quality is the best I can do to sum up the trip. On the upside, I will say that I think the water we fished has potential. I’ll just have to spend some time getting to know the area to locate the bigger fish.

What a great day on the water! We spent 5 hours wading and fishing the Juniata River with very good success. I landed 18 smallmouth bass and my two fishing buddies combined for 8 smallmouth. No monster were caught today but we did catch a couple around 16 inches. The nice thing was that we didn’t have to deal with the little guys. Only a couple of the fish were under 10 inches.

The crappie are definitely biting at Sayers Dam now. It took a while for the water to reach spawning temperature but things are now in full swing. The crappie are a little on the small side but I suspect as time goes on the big boys and girls will move in shallow.
UPDATE JUNE 2 2008: I made a quick trip out this evening. The bigger crappie seem to be moving shallower now making them easier to catch for us bank fisherman on the lake. Hot spots for crappie on Sayers Dam include, Upper Greens Run, Lower Greens Run, Hunters Run, and the bridge that spans the lake.

Today was on of the warmest and sunniest days so far this spring. The smallmouth responded helping me complete one of the best “quality” days I’ve had on the river. The numbers were fair but the size of the fish was just flat out FUN! I landed 22 fish and lost about 5 during a four hour stretch of fishing. Only two of my fish were under 13 inches and the largest was 17. Two of the Smallmouth I lost would have pushed the 20 inch barrier!. Oh, and it gets better. The remainder of the fish were like cookie cutters falling in the 14 to 16 inch ranger. Yes, before you doubters start. All the fish were measured by my trusty de-liar..you know, my tape measure. Feel free to read on to get the details!
