Smallmouth tips for our recent changing weather

Friday, August 8th, 2008

0803081311-1The weather the past couple of weeks has been changing hourly, daily, and weekly. It been a real mixed bag and the smallmouth bass bite has been running hot and cold. I’ve been hitting the water a minimum of four times a week over the past two months and have found some strategies to adjust and keep the bite going even through the tough times.

Fishing the Meadow Mouse for smallmouth bass

Sunday, July 27th, 2008
This entry is part 2 of 2 in the series Top Five Top Water Baits for Smallmouth Bass

meadowmouse This is the second installment of my top five top water baits for smallmouth bass. This week I’m writing about my all time favorite top water for early morning and late last day smallmouth bass fishing, the Heddon Meadow Mouse. You would be hard pressed to find a top water that can produce smallmouth as consistently during the summer months. It has an uncanny ability to entice mr. smallie to hit even at times when they totally ignore other baits. When I decided to write this article, I went out to take some fising pictures about an hour or so before dark. Less than 15 casts produced 5 blow ups, 3 hooked smallmouth, and two landed. Thats not bad productivity for any topwater. The Meadow Mouse has a very unique action and offers a subtle presentation that drives smallmouth bass wild!

Vacation on the West Brach of the Susquehanna

Sunday, July 20th, 2008

DCP 0497-1I’ve been doing a ton of fishing this season so I haven’t had much time to write. Since the last part of May, I’ve been on the water at least four times a week! I like to tell people that I fish more than any man should be allowed unless he’s doing it for a living! I took a couple of my days of vacation in early July to hit the West Branch of the Susquehanna in the Montgomery area. The fishing was very slow. I didn’t feel too bad because other fisherman we talked to were struggling to put fish in the boat more than us . The two highlights of the trip were a 19.5 inch beautiful smallmouth bass caught by my buddy and a 16 inch tagged fish that I landed!

Fishing the tiny torpedo for smallmouth bass

Thursday, July 10th, 2008
This entry is part 1 of 2 in the series Top Five Top Water Baits for Smallmouth Bass

tinytorpedoOver the course of the next several weeks I’ll be posting a series of articles outlining my “top five” top water baits for smallmouth bass. Like any top “anything” list, it is definitely subjective but that’s the fun of a top five list! Its like sitting around the bait shop arguing with you’re buddies about the best tube bait or the best spinner bait. I find there is almost always something to be learned in these “discussions”. My list is in no particular order. All five baits I’m going to cover are effective given the right situation. This week I’ll kick things off with what has become my favorite top water bait this season. I’ve caught a ton of smallies on this bait. The tried and true Tiny Torpedo.

West Branch Susquehanna River, Pennsylvania Fishing Report

Sunday, June 8th, 2008

Smallmouth BassIt was a day of smallmouth “dinks” in the West Branch of the Susquehanna today. A fishing partner and I explored a new section of this river. We fished for about 4 hours. I landed 24 smallmouth bass and my fishing buddy landed 11 smallmouth. Only three of my fish were respectable measuring in the 13-14 inch range. My fishing buddy didn’t fair much better with most of his fish around 10 inches or so. Lots of action but little in the way of quality is the best I can do to sum up the trip. On the upside, I will say that I think the water we fished has potential. I’ll just have to spend some time getting to know the area to locate the bigger fish.
