Fishing rods, getting it right! Action vs Power

Go to any fishing forum on the internet and you’ll find the topic of rod selection somewhere in the top 20 threads. Invariably, you’ll read folks posts about their opinions on the best jig and pig rod, spinner bait rod, or finesse bait rod. Many times you’ll find some great pearls of wisdom. However, mixed with those pearls of wisdom you’ll also find the word “action” misused many times over. That’s what this article is all about. Setting the record strait on “action” vs “power”.

Brief introduction to spinning reels and casting

Spinning reels are probably the most popular and versatile type of fishing reel on the market. They can handle a variety of fishing situations, lures, and lure weights. Coupled with the fact that most manufactures offer an arsenal of spinning reels capable of casting baits as small as 1/32 oz. and up, its not surprising to see a lot of these reels used on the streams and lakes of Pennsylvania’s multi-species waters.

Anatomy of a baitcast reel

Baitcast reels are among the most difficult reels to operate and probably not for a beginner. They require an educated thumb for making successful casts. The most notable difference with these reels is the spool. The spool is set parallel on the reel and actually rotates as line is cast off the reel or retrieved. These reels are most suited for casting heavier baits over 1/16 oz.

Preventing line twist in spinning reels

Line twist is as inevitable as death and taxes. Many types of lures such as soft jerk baits, in-line spinners, and soft plastics of various types can and do cause line twist. River and stream fisherman in particular are often the victims of some serious line twist. Lets face it, moving water can make our baits look like the venerable “helicopter lure”! There is no sure way to avoid line twist completely but a few simple strategies can certainly reduce occurrences significantly.
